Kerrville/Hill County

Public schooling is provided by Kerrville Independent School District, a TEA (Texas Education Agency)-recognized district. The enrollment of about 4,800 is spread across 11 total campuses, including a Head Start pre-kindergarten facility. The student-to-teacher ratio is low, at just less than 15.

Kerrville acknowledges its Old West heritage with museums and year-round activities and community events. The Cowboy Artists of America Museum, the Hill Country Museum and the Museum of Western Art each display their own interpretations of Western culture and history. Hill Country rodeos, country western dances and music festivals provide opportunities for residents to have some fun, Western-style.

The beautiful landscapes of Kerrville and the Guadalupe River Valley add much to the charm of the city’s lifestyle. The terrain includes rugged hillsides, oak and cypress trees, lush valleys and scenic waterways. Not surprisingly, wildlife flourishes in Hill Country, making it a popular bird-watching and hunting destination. An estimated 45 species of exotic games animals and four rare or endangered bid species can be spotted in Hill Country.

Popular outdoor attractions are Kerrville-Schreiner Park, Louise Hays Park and the Lost Maples State Natural Area, which is about 90 minutes southwest of Kerrville. The scenic pool created by the Guadalupe River at Louise Hays Park offers a wonderful downtown retreat. State-owned Kerrville-Schreiner Park covers 500 acres of undeveloped land, also along the Guadalupe River.

One of the draws of Kerrville is its year-round mild climate. Average temperatures fluctuate only between about 45 degrees and 80 degrees. It rarely gets warmer than the high-90s or cooler than the low-30s. Annual precipitation is about 32 inches on average, concentrated in May, June, September and October. Year-round sunshine is about 55%.
